President and Founding Owner
Since 1989, Jim has served as President and lead salesman for the company. He brings to his position a love for all things house. From selling the old and buying the new, to casting a vision for your remodel, Jim brings his wealth of knowledge and his passion to every job site. You can take a tour of his own home over on our blog and see his talent on display!
A native of Missouri, Jim left his hometown of Springfield in 1974 to complete his degree in marketing and economics at Rockhurst University. After nearly 10 years in the banking industry, Jim began to pursue a career in real estate – a career that continues to this day as he remains an Associate Broker for Kansas City Better Homes and Gardens. It was through this first home-related endeavor that Jim was inspired to delve deeper into the industry. In 1989 he and his former partner began to buy speculative rehab homes in and around Mission Hills. It was before the ‘house-flipping’ craze of the early ‘00s and it landed them a name as one of the premier remodeling firms in Kansas City.
In 1999 Jim was appointed by the mayor of Mission Hills to serve on the city’s Architectural Review Board. Six years later he was named chairman of the board. Tasked with approving all new homes and additions proposed by residents of Mission Hills, Jim widened his exposure to yet another aspect of home remodeling. Coupled with his experience as a general contractor and real estate broker, his understanding of the ‘big picture’ of home ownership and design grew yet again.
Then, in 2008 Jim earned the designation of “Certified Remodeler” by the National Association of Remodeling Industry.
For the last 25 years Jim has brought a unique perspective and attitude to the remodeling business. He is known for getting as excited for a project as the clients themselves. To those who know him well, he’s also known for his unshakeable love for Kansas City. He takes the long way home most days simply to drive down his favorite streets and discover new pockets of the city. But his favorite view has to be of the incredible screened in porch he and his wife share at home.
Jim and his wife Mindy have lived in Kansas City for over 40 years – raising three adult children and now spoiling three sweet grandkids. His youngest daughter Kylie now works alongside Jim at Scovell Remodeling. His firstborn with special needs, Ryan, passed away in August of 2014 yet continues to have a profound impact at Scovell Remodeling.
