Basements get a bad rap - dark, cold, and a little forgotten. But we see them as some of the most flexible square footage in your home. When designed thoughtfully, they can feel just as finished and inviting as your main level. Not like a place you tolerate, but a place you actually want to be. For some clients, we’ve designed great guest quarters in the basement. And, for others, their basement has become their favorite place to entertain and hang out - complete with a wet bar and entertainment center.
And, don’t forget a gym. We’ve put many a gym in our clients’ basements.
If you asked our founder Jim Scovell - he’d tell you that step #1 is to stop calling them a basement, and start thinking about it as a lower level. An extension of your house. While many people will scare you out of it - we love carpet in the basement. We’re always in favor of a good water remediation system installed so that you don’t have to resort to cold tile floors. Beyond that - doing a true hardwood stair system, adding crown molding and nice millwork, installing a sheet-rocked ceiling with great recessed lighting, and featuring some kind of custom cabinetry. And then, of course, it never hurts to warm it up with a great grasscloth on the walls.
